• welcome
Welcome to I Solemnly Swear! ISS is an active, literate/advanced Marauders-era roleplay based in the Marauders' sixth year. Please sign up with your character's First and Last name in Titlecase (e.g., Lily Evans).

The beginning of the summer holidays are a much-needed break from the stress of schoolwork, exams, and the like. It has been a difficult year for everyone, what with the dark events happening during term, and the increasing panic and fear outside the school's walls. Now, with a fresh batch of graduates to go face the world, everybody must still be on their guard, because anything might happen, and everyone must be prepared to face it one way or another.

THE RULES

Signing Up

You must sign up as your character's first and last name, with the proper spelling, capitalisation, and spacing.
EXAMPLE: James Potter, Professor Albus Dumbledore, etc.
When you register, you will notice a box for your alias. This is where you put your name, as in, what we can call you. Please note that this is not the name or nickname of your character.

Activity

If you plan on joining this site, you are committing to check your posts every once in a while. We do not ask that you spend an hour a day on here or even fifteen minutes. But, we do not want people submitting their applications and disappearing. It isn't polite, and this is a fast-paced site that requires activity.

Character Limit

  • Only one character is allowed per account. When you first join, you may make three characters, if you wish (though we do ask that you don't create them all at the same time). Take your time with character creation so that you can learn your own limitations when it comes to actively posting; as well, it gives members more time to get to know you.
  • We are trying to keep a balanced ratio between genders. We realise that the ratio between females and males is almost always going to be uneven, but to try and keep it as even as possible, we prefer that you create one male for every two girls. Please note that if you joined with a male character, your next character does not have to be male. We don't require that you have an even number of each gender, but we don't want to see a member with seven girls and one guy. We're trying to keep a balanced ratio on the site at all times.
  • Once you have been an active member for a while, you may apply for another character; however, there is a form you must PM to Dumbledore's account before you post an application. For more information, you may visit this thread once you have become a member. ISS does not have a character limit, but if admins feel that you are neglecting your characters, we may contact you and ask you to consider dropping some.

Out of Character Discussion
  • You are allowed to swear, but please refrain from using profane language all the time. Name-calling or foul language directed at each other will not be tolerated. In character and in threads is one thing, but member-to-member is another. Simply put: Be polite. Respect each other. As well, we are a literate site, and this extends to the c-box. Please don't use chatspeak. It's honestly harder to read than actual English. The c-box is not to be used for advertisements for other websites, or spammed with links to open threads/plotters.

Posting Length
  • While we don't have a set word count requirement, ISS is still an advanced literate role play. Therefore, we do expect posts to contain more than a few sentences, enough so that your partner has something to play off and give a decent reply. A good goal for each post is between 300-500 words, but you are more than welcome to go over. If you're still unsure as to how ISS posts normally go, feel free to browse our active threads and archives. You can have as many paragraphs as you like, but try to follow the general rules of creative writing (ie, we don't want to see one hundred one-sentence paragraphs).
  • We want descriptions! The same exact paragraph elaborated upon becomes so much more filling. We love to see depth, and really let us get inside your character's head. We want to understand them. It enriches plots and posts indefinitely.
  • Don't be afraid to explore their true thoughts and feelings, or even surroundings, even if it gets lengthy - trust us, we like that!
  • Keep up with your threads. There's no limit to how many you can have: it is up to your discretion as to how many you can handle. Please be responsible and think about how many you can take on at a time.
  • If you are ending a thread (the last post for you, and the last for your partner) the last two posts in the thread may be shorter.

Note/Owl Threads and Class Threads
  • ISS does classes a little differently (see below), meaning that fourth and fifth years share a class, as do sixth and seventh years. This means that if your character is in an actual classroom, a fourth year cannot realistially have a note with a seventh year.
  • However, we don't like to restrict plottage, so we have this allowance:
OWL-year students and NEWT-students can have notes anywhere outside an actual classroom. For example, the library, Concourse, a remedial class, etc. In an actual class, however, 4th/5th years can only note with 4th/5th years, and 6th/7th years can only note with 6th/7th years.  Please be aware of this when doing note threads.

Spell Check, Grammar and Punctuation

We don't expect perfection as none of us are professional editors, nor do we have them available to us. However, we are a literate site. Please proof-read your posts to ensure that the quality is to the best of your ability. We all make mistakes, but try to use the helpful resources available to you, such as Spell Check and the Grammar Check in Microsoft Word.  We do expect proper capitalisation of names, beginnings of sentences, etc. in threads.  The exception would be OOC chat, or in notes/owls, if the character does not write in capitals as an IC trait.

Marriage and Pregnancies

What your character does with his or her love life is up to you. Before you decide to get your students engaged or plan a wedding, please keep realism in mind. For example, students sixteen and under legally can't get married without parental consent. As well, Hogwarts does not offer family dorms. Teenage engagements happen, but please think realistically before the knot is actually tied.

When it comes to pregnancies, you must PM Dumbledore's account to first ask permission. Yes, even graduates, and even canons (if nothing else, to keep track of who's expecting). Although we generally are not restrictive with plottage, we do have to keep a certain degree of realism in mind; we don't want toddlers running through the corridors. If your characters are sexually active, there are a number of contraceptive methods available to them (whether they purchase it during their Hogsmeade trips, or if they're able to get contraception from Madame Pomfrey). If you do wish to have a pregnancy plot: When you PM Dumbledore, please mention the characters involved (both of them), and why you want a pregnancy plot to happen. Do not go ahead with the plot until you have approval; we have the right to deny a pregnancy plot.

On a related note: ISS is a mature site. We follow Jcink's Guidelines, meaning no explicit content. If your characters are getting hot and heavy, despite the fact that some members may be comfortable writing explicit scenes, we prefer a "fade to black" approach simply in accordance with Jcink's rules. However, if your thread is heading that direction but it is important to go just a little further for the sake of character development, please keep in mind that not everyone is comfortable with reading it. For that reason, please place an [M] in the subtitle of your topic, and please use this stamp at the top of your first post, to warn anyone who may not wish to read such material:

Deaths and Suicides

If you wish to have your character die, please remember that it is a final decision: a character cannot be brought back after death, nor can they become a ghost. Please consult an admin before killing off a character, regardless of how it happens. This includes killing other characters: you must have the permission of the person who plays the character to be killed.

Suicide is a tough subject and can be a trigger. Please use discretion before having your character go through such an event, even if it's an attempt. Again, consult an admin first, and please post a warning on your thread if your character goes through with it so that people who do not wish to read that don't have to.

Language

Swearing in and out of character is fine, but please refrain from using profane language all the time. Respect each other Out of Character no matter how much your characters hate each other. Do not let In Character feuds effect your Out of Character friendship - or vice versa. As well, when posting dialogue in languages other than English, please provide the translation in a footnote below the post.

No Perfect Characters

And by "perfect" we mean "no Mary-Sues or Gary-Stus", please! No one is perfect, we all have flaws, and since we try to be as realistic as possible on this site, we'd prefer that you keep the description of your characters fairly simple. Make your character more relateable! Give him or her imperfections - maybe he has a crooked nose, or she has frizzy hair. We realise that your characters are depicted by celebrities and models, but even they don't look perfect all the time - we all know most of that is just airbrushing and make up anyway!

And it's not just physical imperfections, either - like we said, nobody is perfect. We all know it's hard to make a flawed character because you may be afraid that no one will want to plot with them, or they won't like them, but it's the flaws and quirks that make up the personality and makes them truly unique! Otherwise, if everyone was super strong, super gorgeous, super intelligent, super nice, and, well, super everything good, then there would no diversity and it'd make for a rather boring RP, don't you think?

Having a character who is constantly depressed or constantly happy can be quite annoying. These characters are people too! They have their ups and their downs. Even the more shy characters can have their outbursts at times! Also, even some extremely happy characters who are nice to everybody have enemies (even if they do not know about it). Please do not have a terribly depressed character known as "emo". If you have read the Harry Potter books, you will notice that hardly any of the teenage characters have tattoos, odd piercings, or even a criminal record.

We also understand that some wizards are talented at various subjects, but nobody is amazing at everything. For example, a character may have a knack for Charms and Transfiguration, but has the lowest score in their class at Defense Against the Dark Arts. Have variety!

No Mythological Characters

We're sorry, but we do not allow any of those creatures - no vampires, demons, zombies, veela, dragons, et cetera, not even half. Also, there was only one werewolf ever studying at Hogwarts as far as we know, and that was Remus Lupin; similarly, the only canonical graduate werewolf we currently allow is Fenrir Greyback. As well, the only Squib we are currently allowing is Arabella Figg, as she is canon. If you're looking to play a mythological creature who is not canon, then we're afraid ISS isn't for you. Having a part-Veela may be discussed, but please bring it to the attention of all staff members before adding it to your character's facts and history – part-Veelas are rare and we can't have twenty running around Hogwarts, after all.

Face Claims

Please use a celebrity who looks the age of your character. If we believe that the celebrity you picked is not realistic, we may ask you to change it before accepting your application. Please be realistic! You can find FC help on this site! After your application is accepted, the celebrity you listed will immediately be added to the list of taken celebrities.

You may change your celeb if no one else is using them, of course. If you decide you want to change your celeb, just post in the Face Claim listings. We will switch it in your application and in the listings. (Please note that you may only change celebs up to two times.).

Reservations for a celeb may be made here. If your character has a photo album, you can reserve celebrities for their parents or guardians. However, to keep from having too many younger celebrities being reserved, you may not reserve face claims for your characters' siblings/friends/cousins. To see the rules and full list, click here
